Are you able to be happier than your parents?

Published September 28, 2026 · By Jay Salisbury

So I keep having a version of the same conversation with people who are actually getting happier. They come to me almost apologizing for it. Something is finally lighter in their life, and instead of enjoying it, they feel guilty. Like they're not allowed to feel this good when their own parent never got to.

Here's what's actually happening. You picked up an unspoken rule a long time ago, without ever agreeing to it: don't outshine the people who came before you. If your mom never let herself be happy, some part of you decided being happier than her would be a betrayal. So you keep your own joy capped right around wherever hers stopped.

Our unconscious self does this out of a warped sense of respect. And the result is two people stuck instead of one.

The fix isn't pretending you don't love them, and it isn't shrinking yourself back down to match. It's putting things back in their right order. But that only works once you've actually let yourself feel what this cost you, not skipped past it. So it starts with acknowledging that first: I see what you went through. It was real. Then, from that place, I have students say something like this, out loud, to the parent they're carrying this for: "You're the big one here. I'm the small one. I'm not better than you, I'm just different. The joy I have doesn't erase what you went through, and my purpose is not to restrict my life on your behalf."

The first time you say it, it can feel strange. It's not really permission from the family you're asking for. It's really permission you're finally giving yourself. That's often the only way this kind of unconscious loyalty will let you progress.

You don't owe anyone your smallness. You inherited a rule that was never actually about love. Love doesn't need you to suffer at the same level as the people who raised you. It just needs you to stop pretending your joy is the thing hurting them.

If this hits home, say these sentences to one or both of your parents. Out loud, alone, in your car, wherever. Notice if anything shifts and please let me know how it goes.
