Doesn't a boundary mean I love them less?

So I get this question a lot: if I really love someone, how can I also set a boundary with them?

People treat love and boundaries like opposite ends of one scale. More boundary, less love. So when someone finally closes a door on a relationship that's draining them, they feel like they failed at loving.

Here's what I actually teach: love and boundary are separate things. You can accept someone completely, exactly as they are, and still decide they don't get access to your time, your home, or your energy right now. Total acceptance doesn't mean total access.

Think about it this way. You can forgive your father for everything that happened and still not invite him to Thanksgiving this year. Those are two different decisions. One is about your heart. The other is about your life.

A boundary isn't a punishment. It's not "you hurt me so now you don't get love." It's "I love you. I also have to protect what I'm building." Both true at once.

If the relationship involves real danger, this isn't a practice exercise. Get support from someone qualified, first.

For everything else, start small. Say no to one low-stakes thing this week - a text you don't answer right away, a plan you don't make because you don't actually want to. Most of the time you'll notice nothing falls apart. And if something does feel uncomfortable, you'll find out you can survive that too - which is its own kind of proof.

That's the muscle. Once it's built on something small, it's there when you need it for something that actually matters.

You don't have to earn the right to protect your own peace. You already have it - just try to do it from a place of love rather than fear.
