What is good spirituality?

Recently I started to write a post that would essentially be a judgement of what I see as false spirituality. But then I began to question what I was doing, with the thought "who am I to question anyone else's spirituality?" Isn't that precisely what I would criticize in most religions?

Now, to be fair, there are undoubtedly spiritual paths more infused with "truth" than others. But the idea that I know what's best for anyone else is suspect at the least. Just because I am choosing to experience freedom doesn't mean that another soul's purpose on earth isn't to experience restriction.

Another thing entirely is if someone comes to me asking for guidance. I can then share my personal experience knowing that whatever vibrates as truth for the other person will be of assistance to them.

Likewise as I write this blog. Nobody is forced to read it and I can trust that whomever does read it will have found it precisely because there is some truth here that will assist them on their journey.

So in that vein, here are some questions that you may want to ask yourself regarding your own spiritual practices:

    1. How many of my practices consist in following a herd to fit in? The herd can be a religious group, movement, people following a certain way of eating, people that dress a certain way, people that listen to certain kinds of music, etc. The point here is that when we do things to fit in we're following our ego, not spirit.

    2. How many of my practices consist in rebelling for the sake of rebellion. This is a different way to fit in, it's just fitting into the rebel herd. Do you wear the rebel uniform? Eat the rebel diet? Do the rebel practices? Again, any time you're seeking identity through a group that's simply your ego at work.

    3. How much importance do I place on objects such as crystals, incense, tarot decks, etc? I use all of these by the way, so not judgement here. The point is, have they become a crutch for you? Do you feel like you can't do a reading without your favorite deck? Do you feel like you can't meditate without your favorite crystal? Spirit is present in everything and everywhere so perhaps ask yourself the reasons you have placed so much importance on these objects.

    4. How much of my energy do I spend actually seeking to connect with God / spirit vs. other spiritual activities? When we seek to have a close, intimate relationship with God, she will respond. When we ask God to become more manifest in our life, he will respond.

God is infinitely available to you. You are free to chase the herd if you desire. But if you truly want to experience God, look inside and follow her guidance to strengthen your connection. Your path home is unique to you. Ask God to illuminate that path and have faith that it will appear.
