The real test of whether you have healed something

Published October 27, 2026 · By Jay Salisbury

So most people think the real test of whether you've healed something is how you react the next time it happens. You get rejected again, and this time you handle it better. Calmer, faster to recover, less wrecked by it. That feels like proof it worked.

I think about this because of my own healing around a rejection wound tied to my relationship with my mother. I didn't just decide to let it go. I felt it through, all the way down, before anything actually shifted. And what I noticed afterward wasn't only that I handled rejection better the next time it came up. It was that the pattern itself started to change.

Before that work, I kept running into the same shape of thing in my relationships, over and over. People stepping back right when things got close. I told myself it was bad timing, or the wrong people, or just how my life worked. After I healed the root of it, I started noticing something different and consistent instead: people staying rather than stepping back.

I think of it like changing a magnet. A wound pulls a certain kind of experience toward you, call it rejection. You can get better at handling what it pulls in. Thicker skin, a calmer reaction, a quicker recovery. That matters, and it's real progress. But heal the wound at the root, and something else becomes possible too. The magnet itself can start pulling in something different.

So here's the real test. Don't just ask how you handled it the last time something hard repeated. Ask what keeps happening in the first place. Write the pattern down in one sentence, the same kind of person pulling away, the same kind of door closing, then ask what wound that pattern might actually be pointing to, not who caused it this time.

If the same shape keeps showing up in your life, it might be worth asking whether that's a wound still asking to be healed at the root, instead of just managed at the surface.
